Promoting British Values at Loxley C of E Primary School

As part of our curriculum we want to ensure that our learners have a shared respect for what makes our school community special within the context of what being a responsible member of the world beyond them means.

We value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of British families and plan a variety of events and learning experiences to celebrate them whilst also reinforcing to our children what it means to be ‘British’. We do this by reinforcing this via our curriculum themes which have strong links to the Geography and History of Britain and the wider world from which our children learn tolerance and respect for all.

We celebrate national events that reflect important landmarks in shaping our nation. Recently we shared with the nation in learning about the contributions made by men and women in World War 1 and World War 2.

We will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.

The school has daily assemblies which uphold traditional values of empathy, respect tolerance and reflect the Christian ethos. These are also taught within weekly PSHCE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout the school day.


Democracy is core to our school ethos. Children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our discussions in assemblies and in class lessons. We also promote democracy through focus days linked to our curriculum breadth of studies.

We recently discussed elections while learning about the 2015 General Election and the council elections on the 7th May. As the school was used as a polling station we had discussions about how the room would be set out with polling booths and a registration table. We also discussed the history of voting in this country with reference to the Suffragette movement.   

Children are always encouraged to express their opinions and we foster an environment where children are safe to disagree with each other.

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced in our expectations throughout every day.

Our school rules are displayed in every classroom and consistently reinforced through positive behaviour strategies. Agreed rules for the playground are also displayed prominently as the children leave the hall to enter the playground and are discussed at the start of each new half-term.

Visits from the local Community Police Support Officers reinforce the idea that there are laws that govern our land which are in place to protect us.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We enhance pupil’s understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society by celebrating the range of rich cultural heritages we have in school, in the local community, in Loxley and in Great Britain.

We celebrate the richness of British culturally diversity through RE lessons, collective worship, through music and dance.

Children of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning and discover similar themes in their religions to Christianity such as Charity.

Our school has a long history of encouraging children to support charities in Britain and throughout the world. As a school we support a range of charities and children have donated clothes and gifts as well as money.

RE and collective worship stimulate discussions around prejudices and prejudice based bullying. Within our curriculum topics opportunities exist to challenge prejudice.

Children visit our church on a regular basis, learning stories from the Christian faith and how to promote Christian values. We also study in RE places of worship from other religions, spiritual leaders, customs and traditions to help learners understand similarities and differences to the Christian faith and understand tolerance and respect for different customs.

Individual Liberty

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices about their learning and their behaviour. Through pupil discussions and reflections we encourage the children to develop a vocabulary to talk about their learning and their behaviour.

We provide children with the opportunities to make choices in a safe environment. Children are encouraged to know and understand their personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely through for example through e-safety discussions, class and whole school assemblies and extra-curricular activities.
